Printed textiles from surviving medieval and renaissance designs are available in several different weights and weaves of natural linen, cotton and silk. Many of the designs are traditionally hand finished with paint or gilding.
Block printing to imitate damask or brocades was documented in 15th Century Italy where it was used for church hangings and as 'garments for little boys or children' which were embellished with lead and mercury based pigments, as well as a more child friendly green colour made from verdigris, vinegar and saffron mixed with rabbit skin glue or boiled calf bones and hoofs. |
